Advice for Parents

When your son or daughter is preparing to study abroad, one of the best gifts you can give them and yourselves is to be involved. By being involved, you will be able to objectively and calmly answer the questions you might have about your son's or daughter's destination country, share with them any advice you might have from your previous travels, and these conversations give you a chance to bond more fully with your daughter or son before they pack up to leave the country.

A very useful resource for parents and loved ones involved in the Study Abroad decision making process is the Loyola Marymount University's Center for Global Education Study Abroad Handbook: Advice for Parents section.

Safety Abroad

Because "anything can happen any time, anywhere," UAB is committed to providing current and accurate US State Department information regarding the levels of safety in other nations.

Students are required, as part of their Pre-Departure Orientation, to provide a signed affidavit stating that they have received a copy of the US State Department Consular Information Sheet about the country to which they will be traveling. We encourage you to read the information contained in these Consular Information Sheets as well.

For the most current information on travel warnings and related updates, visit the Bureau of Consular Affairs' web site or contact the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of Public Affairs, at 202-647-5225.

Emergencies Involving U.S. Citizens Abroad

The US State Department can provide useful Emergency Services for US Citizens Traveling Abroad.

We also rely on a network of in-country representatives/coordinators of the programs with which we work to provide us with information regarding current safety/security/health issues.

Health Abroad

As health is a major safety factor related to study abroad, we collaborate with the UAB Traveler's Clinic in providing pertinent International Traveler's Health information. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization provide timely information regarding healthy travel from vaccinations to current public health concerns.

Medical Emergencies Involving U.S. Citizens Abroad

The US State Department provides extremely useful Medical Emergency Information and Services for US Citizens Traveling Abroad.

The US State Department's Embassies & Consular Offices can provide the contact information for Hospitals and Doctors Abroad.
