Courses & Credits

Come study in Québec, Canada!

Foreign Languages and most other majors can use these credits to complete their degrees! All while living and learning in Chicoutimi, Canada!

Program Purpose: This course is an intensive 6-credit class designed to introduce students to the people and culture of Québec and Canada. This is a total immersion program. Students have the choice of living either with a Québecois family that speaks only French or in a residence hall where only French is spoken. All courses are conducted entirely in French, and each student must sign a contract to speak only French. If students violate the contract, they run the risk of being expelled from the program. Students spend 4 hours every morning in French language/grammar classes. Depending on the level of the course, students spend either 2-3 hours in the afternoon in either French language/grammar courses or culture workshops.

In general, the course requirements are as follows:

  • Attendance and participation: 10%
  • Oral Presentation: 20%
  • Exams: 30%
  • Compositions/ skits performed in class: 40%

The program provides a wide array of educational and cultural activities: Every Monday is movie night. The students choose between two Québecois films. Every Wednesday, students participate in improvisational skits. Every Friday, there are Soirees (parties) with different themes such as famous actors, rock stars, etc. On Tuesdays and Thursday there are workshops on Québecois dance, music, and history. There are also various sports activities available daily such as canoeing, rock climbing, swimming and walking.

Students will also visit the Musée de la pulperie to learn about Québecois history, la site de la Nouvelle-France to learn about Canadian history, the zoo at Saint-Felcien to learn about the various environments/animals of Canada. There is also a weekend trip to Québec city where students visit "old Québec", the Citadelle, museums, and other historic sites.
