Join renowned Old Dominion University (ODU) Professor Dr. Ted Remley and UAB Professor Dr. Larry Tyson for this once-in-a-lifetime cultural immersion experience offered in conjunction with the Old Dominion University Darden College of Education "A Counselor's View of Italy" program!

Faculty Leaders:

Dr. Ted Remley is a lawyer and counselor and is a former Executive Director of the American Counseling Association. Dr. Remley serves as faculty member in the Counseling Graduate Program at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Lawrence Tyson, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Counselor Education Program in the Department of Human Studies located in the School of Education. Dr. Tyson's primary responsibilities are advising, planning, and coordinating the school counseling concentration and adventure therapy studies. Dr. Tyson has been at UAB for 12 years, coming from Orlando, Florida where he was a practicing school counselor.

Come study in Tuscany, Italy!

A two-week study institute set in a picturesque 14th century villa on a mountainside in Tuscany Learn about the counseling profession in Italy from Italian mental health professionals (including counselors, psychiatrists, and social workers) PLUS study with nationally known counseling professors will lead seminars related to their specialties in counseling. Visit ancient Italian cities on day trips including Florence, Pisa, Assisi, Siena, Greve, Lucca, and San Gimignano. This institute offers the comfort and security of a planned itinerary that includes an American guide who is fluent in Italian. Participants stay the entire two-weeks in the same room in a magnificent 14th century villa that features a spectacular view of the Tuscan hillside. Frequent visits to a small Italian village are possible that provide a flavor of Italy that can only be experienced in the rural countryside. In addition, all of the major cities in Tuscany will be visited, including two days in the culturally rich city of Florence.

Credit Options (All ODU credits can be applied as elective credit toward the UAB Counselor Education Masters or Ed.S. degrees and with special approval by UAB Dept. of Psychology and UAB Dept. of Counselor Education, UAB Psychology majors with advanced standing may be able to earn credit toward their degree):

  • 3 graduate credits in counseling (COUN 695, or COUN 895),
  • 3 undergraduate credits in human services (HUMS 495), or
  • 45 continuing education hours

Eligibility:

  • At least Sophomore standing.

  • Minimum GPA of 2.7 or above (Some programs require a 3.0 GPA.)

  • Permission of UAB Study Abroad Program

    Program Fees

    UAB Student Cost (based on 5 participants - cost could increase or decrease depending on total enrollment): $3845.00 (Includes Estimated Airfare + ODU Tuition + Living/Travel Costs + Transfer of ODU credit to UAB + UAB Faculty Leader + UAB Traveler Accident Insurance)

    Payments will be made as follows:

    • Approximately $1,100.00 paid directly to travel agent for round-trip airfare,
    • AND $2745.00 paid directly to ODU by MasterCard or Visa or by submitting a check or money order made out to Old Dominion University as follows:

      The total ODU program fee of $2745.00 covers:

      • Transfer of ODU credit to UAB
      • Room in villa (shared room with shared bath); Single rooms available for additional fee of $350
      • Most meals
      • ODU Tuition for graduate or undergraduate credits or continuing education hours
        NOTE: All participants must register for graduate credits, undergraduate credits, or continuing education hours. All lectures and workshops are open to all participants.
      • All transportation within Italy
      • Entry to two museums in Florence
      • English speaking institute guide throughout trip and local guide in Siena

      Not covered by the program fee:

      • Your roundtrip airfare from your home to Rome, Italy
      • 6 lunches on day trips to ancient cities and one dinner in Siena
      • Traveler Accident Insurance (health or life insurance may be purchased independently)

      ODU Payment Schedule: $250 deposit upon application (on or before January 15, 2010); $1,195 due on February 15, 2010; and final payment of $1,300 due on April 16, 2010.

      IMPORTANT NOTE: This program is run through Old Dominion University. All student participants are bound by both the UAB and the ODU student conduct, cancellation, payment, and academic policies. Any requests for withdrawal/cancellation will be handled by ODU.
