Program Purpose: By examining seminal archeological discoveries and artifacts dating back to 13thC B.C. students will gain knowledge of the histories and world contributions of the Thracian and Greek civilizations. The study will be centered on a specific theme: the myths and facts about Orpheus, the mystic Thracian poet and musician. This is also the topic for theatrical exploration by members of the Experimental Company who are joining the class. In assistance to the course theme, most of the historical sites to be visited will inform on classical art and performance. Students will attend theatre workshops, see theatre performances and have a chance to perform an experimental piece in front of an academic audience.

Additional to studying the ancient cultures of Bulgaria and Greece, students will touch on three other distinct layers of Balkan cultural history: Byzantine (A.D. 6thC-14thC), Ottoman (15thC-18thC), and Modern (19th C- present).

Re-discovering the Ancient World: Students will explore the ancient traditions and world contributions of the Thracian and Greek civilizations. The course will include extensive travel to many historical sites, museums, and cultural centers.

Sites: Some of the places to visit in Bulgaria include the newly discovered sanctuary of Dionysus at Perperikon, the tomb of Orpheus in the Rhodope Mountain, and the Thracian Tomb in Kazanluk currently on the UNESCO list of international treasures.

In Greece, students will explore the cradles of classical Greek civilization: Mycenae, Athens, Epidaurus, and Delphi. These architectural sites inform on the early development of European theatre, philosophy and religion.
