THE PROGRAM

BY 267/567 encompasses field-based studies of the rich diversity of marine, freshwater and terrestrial habitats and associated fauna and flora of San Salvador, a pristine island in the southern Bahamian chain. Students will hike through inland forests and coastal marine communities to examine the tropical vegetation uniquely adapted to these environments as well as the abundant bird life. Shallow-water snorkeling will provide easy access to a rich diversity of coral reef fish and marine invertebrates, as well as seagrass communities, mangrove estuaries, and soft-bottom sand habitats. A boat trip to an offshore island to visit a rookery with nesting seabirds is also planned. Students will participate in two hands-on research projects examining movement patterns of intertidal gastropods and the population dynamics of land crabs.

Several lectures will be arranged prior to departure.

You will be living and completing your research at the Gerace Research Center on San Salvador Island.

Download the UAB in the Bahamas 2010 Application and take it to Dr. Ken Marion or Dr. Jim McClintock for approval, and then return it to the UAB Study Away Program office.
