Come study in Florence, Italy!

Subjects Offered:

6 credit hours of ITL 100 or 200 level coursework (dependent upon language placement exam)

Today Italy welcomes the opportunities and challenges of yet a new millennium. In this new era, Italy emerges as an acknowledged world leader not only in its already affirmed sectors concerning art and lifestyle, but also industrial design, fashion, production and manufacturing of many important, versatile and useful products exported to all over the world. When we think of Italy today, names such as: Benetton, Fiat, Ferragamo, Ferrero, Diesel, Alessi and Ferrari cannot be overlooked. The Italian industry once described as flamboyant and impractical, today has become a world power in many industrial fields.

Course Requirements: Students are required to enroll in one UAB Italian language class taught by Prof. Faki and one Italian language class taught by the faculty of the Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri. Students will be placed by interview and placement exam into classes according to their Italian language levels

Eligibility:

  • At least Sophomore standing.

  • Minimum GPA of 2.7 or above (Some programs require a 3.0 GPA.)

    Program Fees

    UAB Study Away (UABSA) - Faculty-led Group Summer Programs Fee Liability

    The total cost of this 20 day expedition from Birmingham, AL is $4,500.00**** per person based on double occupancy and is broken down as follows:

    • Estimated UAB Tuition & Fees for 3 credit hours: $450.00*
    • UAB in Italy Program Fee: $2,950.00**
    • Estimated Round-trip Airfare (Birmingham to Florence, Italy): $1,100.00***

    Please note:

    • The cost of this travel program is based on 10 full fare participants and may be increased for a smaller group.
    • The $4,500.00 Program Fee does NOT include costs for lunches. Students are encouraged to plan to take $280.00 with them to cover lunch costs throughout the program, though individual eating habits may require more or less than the suggested amount.

    *Refer to www.students.uab.edu for listing of Tuition and Fee costs and payment deadlines.

    **Program Fee includes: in-country transportation, room, board (breakfast & dinner daily), travelers accident insurance, 1 UAB faculty member, local guides, entrance fees.

    ***Estimated round-trip airfare is from Birmingham to Florence, Italy. You are required to fly with the group arrangements that have been made.

    ****Costs subject to change without notice due to fluctuations in currency conversion rates and/or student enrollment. Furthermore, taxes and fuel surcharges which are not covered by our contract with the airlines are subject to change and may result in additional charges. Although we make every effort to find suitable roommates for each participant, a single supplement may be charged for any single for which no suitable roommate is available. Other costs such as personal expenses, passport fees, vaccinations and luggage fees are not included in the above estimate.

    PAYMENT DEADLINES & IMPORTANT DATES:

    • STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY & MAKE $600.00 DEPOSIT PAYMENT BY DECEMBER 15th.
    • JANUARY 15th: Application & $600.00 Deposit Deadline
    • ASAP: AIRLINE TICKET PURCHASE*
    • On or before February 15th: $1,175.00 Initial Deposit due
    • On or before March 15th: $1,175.00 Final Payment due
    • March 2: UAB Study Away Scholarship Applications due
    • April 29th: MANDATORY Pre-departure Orientation Heritage Hall Room 102 9am - 1pm
    • Approximately May 2nd: UAB Tuition and fees due for Summer May term.

    *You are required to fly with the group arrangements that have been made. Airfare is estimated and is dependent upon time of purchase. Students are encouraged to purchase trip cancellation insurance as most airfares are non-refundable where travelers do not have trip cancellation insurance. PAYMENT FOR ROUND-TRIP INTERNATIONAL AIRFARE IS NOT PAYABLE TO UAB AND, AS SUCH, UAB WILL NOT REFUND ANY PAYMENTS TOWARD ROUND-TRIP INTERNATIONAL AIRFARE COVERAGE. It is your responsibility to understand all the rules and requirements of ticketing purchase, frequent flyer miles programs, etc.
