ABOUT THE CITY OF JAEN

Archaeological research has underlined that Jaen is one of the oldest cities of the Iberian peninsula. Historical sources speak of a splendidly defended city, that was chosen by Asdrubal Barca, from Carthage, as a centre of its operations. The Greek and Roman authors called it Oringis or Auringis. In 207 BC it was taken by Publio Escipion, that began the process of Romanisation finished with the decree of Vespasiano that declared it Town Council Flavio Aurgitano. The dominion of Rome saw the agricultural landscape reformed with a geometric parcelling of the territory was also transformed.

Jaen the Muslim city: Abd the al-Rahman II moved the capital of the cora from the Guard (Mentesa) to Yayyan (Jaen). The transfer was accompanied by an ambitious official work programme, among which the mosque, a castle in the hill or the water pipes of the spring of the Magdalena are remarkable. As proof of its prosperity, the city had five baths, of which two have been located.

Jaen the Christian City: While the Christian armies advanced by the Guadalquivir, Jaen underwent several battles, but without being taken. Finally, in 1234 the Nasrid king of Granada Ibn al-Ahmar, was declared subordinate of Fernando III, he delivered the city to him and he committed to pay a tax. So the city became a border area of first order. The Castilian king moved to Jaen the headquarters of the bishopric, which was until then in Baeza, and the city increased its might as advanced into the "land of the Moors". Enrique II granted the legend him that trims its escudo "Very noble, famous and faithful city of Jaen, keeps and defends of the kingdoms of Castille". In the beginnings of the Modern Age, Jaen had become one of the large cities of the Castilian kingdom. In 1587 it had about 6,000 people who lived an agrarian lifestyle. There was also an remarkable artisan sector.

Today the city looks to the future as the main olive-growing centre of the country and with a young and mighty University.
