HORIZONS: Study Abroad Alumni Newsletter
Fall 2005
First of all, I would just like to express how wonderful it has been to work
with all of you during the process of identifying the study abroad program that
would suit your needs. It has been
even more fun to see some of you as you have returned and listen as you recount
your amazing stories of learning, adventure and personal growth.
I hope that each and every one of you has experienced some life-changing
aspect of your study abroad program and that you are finding ways to help those
around you understand the importance of opening one’s mind to a more global
perspective.
Now that the Fall 2005 semester is well under way, we are pleased to present our
inaugural edition of the UAB Study Abroad Alumni Newsletter.
We hope that this informational newsletter will allow alumni like you
connect with your peers by learning about the experiences of other study abroad
alumni, ideas to help you as you re-integrate into the culture of the UAB campus
after having been abroad, and find ways to continue to incorporate the
international lessons you learned while abroad into your daily lives here in the
United States.
This first issue is devoted to highlight some of the great study abroad
experiences students had this past year.
We also want to use this issue to extend a call for participation in
upcoming events and study abroad initiatives on campus.
I hope you enjoy, learn and potentially contribute to the development of this
newsletter. Let your study abroad
story be heard!

Rainforest Ecology Program in Costa Rica
Offers Students Practical Field
Training Like No Other
For several years Drs. Ken Marion and Jim McClintock have led a group of
students to Costa Rica to complete
on-site field work as part of their
Rainforest Ecology course. This
year, the dynamic teaching duo continued their long history of successful study
abroad programming by bringing Biological studies to life for 19 UAB students by
leading a trek into the field to experience the Costa Rican Rainforest close-up.

Studying Art History and Italian with the Renaissance Masters
Also in May of 2005, UAB
students traveled to Florence, Italy with UAB faculty members Dr. Katherine
McIver (Art and Art History) and Professor Belita Faki (DFLL) to study Art
History and Italian language in "The Cradle of the Renaissance." The birthplace
of Dante and
Michelangelo and home to other such greats as Brunelleschi, Donatello, Masaccio,
Botticelli and Michelangelo, Florence (Firenze) welcomed UAB students and gave
them the chance to explore her streets, cathedrals, museums and riverbanks to
learn Art History from the masters. While not touring the city and
discussing art and architecture, students were immersed in Italian language
classes which helped them to come closer to understanding the cultural context
of Italy and being able to interact on a daily basis with their Florentine
surroundings.

Students Experience Columbus’ New World
First-Hand
This past May 2005, students
had the opportunity to participate in a unique study abroad program in the
Dominican Republic led by UAB faculty members Drs. Carlos Orihuela (Dept. of
Foreign Languages & Literatures) and Dr. Linda Frost (Honors Program and Dept.
of English). From May 6-27, 2005, students traveled to La Republica
Dominicana to learn about the history of the Dominican Republic and the
literature it has generated from Christopher Columbus to Julia Alvarez.
Students traveled from the metropolitan to the back country, from Santo Domingo
to the remote Jarabacoa where they lived for one week on the coffee farm of
famed Dominican author Julia Alvarez who engaged the students in discussions
about the creative writing process and how she has been able to capture the
hearts and minds of her readers with her poignant Dominican
characters. With the knowledge gained from these readings and by using the
settings, conversations, and events of the "New World" of the Dominican Republic
that daily confronted and surprised them, the students in this course developed
their writing skills through Creative
Writing workshops entitled "A New World In New Words in the Dominican Republic."
This program was a magical mixture of adventure, living literature and deep
cultural exploration
that has changed the lives of each participant forever.
